Making the Most of Backwoods Camping Sites

By: Rolland Meigs

If you love the outdoors like I do, I'm sure you'll love going camping at remote camp sites. Be it a weekend retreat, with just you and your partner, or a whole family with children as well as pets, the experience will last a life time. Late spring to early fall would be the top period to take your camping holidays except of course you're into winter camping. I am not, something regarding sleeping while in the snow just doesn't set well with me.
Now there are numerous methods to set up at the different camping sites. If there are roads that come into the camp site, I have friends that transport their 5th wheel trailers and live like kings and queens. They even own satellite receivers so they do not fail to see the ball or hockey game. A few like me, go slightly more primitive, I use a 16 ft. cargo trailer. I load up my ATV's inside the trailer, then when I get to the site I unload the ATV’s then set the trailer up for me and my guess to sleep indoors. I feel safer by doing this within bear country.
Also when I was younger I have slept in the back of my pick-up that has a cap on the truck. For those brave at heart there’s always tent sites and in many cases just a canvas that may be stretch out over top you, and sleep in your sleeping bag underneath.
What Is Desirable At A Isolated Camping Site?
Some of the things you will certainly not find at a wilderness site is running water, restrooms or showers. But that’s ok because where I typically camp in Northern Ontario it is usually in one of many lake camp sites. Which provide you with most of the water you need to shower in. Merely leap in. As far as a toilet goes there is a big woods all-around you. Even though some people who make use of these sites yearly have erected out houses and leave them there for the next years use.
In days gone by we would merely drink out of the lake, they where crystal clean. But at the present most campers bring water with them to drink. Well not only water, they're going to bring along some other drinks for their journey north. But for your additional needs for water, the lake water is just sufficient. If you overlook the drinking water simply boil the water for a short time ahead of the time before you require it.
The great thing of using a cargo trailer designed for camping, is you can load up all your goods inside it until you get to camp. Next simply unload and set up in the camp site. You will have to make sure you have pots and pans with you. Both for cooking and cleaning up following the meal. A rope that can be used for a clothes line is also very handy. One must always have a good supply of toilet paper available, although in a pinch I've used vegetation. Toilet paper is a great deal nicer though.
For food i bring a great deal of canned supplies. Really the only thing is don't forget the can opener. Using an axe to open cans leaves a few metal burrs which could hurt you. In addition bring lots of clothing. Be certain you've got clothing for all season's with you. I have been camping in May and it has been snowing, and the exact same time the next year it could be in the 90's. Therefore be prepared.
In the evening its always nice to have a campfire. Therefore you will want an axe or chainsaw. As a rule you do not need to fret about firewood since the woods are filled with dead trees. What's more its nice if you carry matches and that means you shouldn't have to rub two sticks together. It has never worked for me yet. At the campfire it is enjoyable to roast some hotdogs or marshmallows over the campfire so bring a great deal of supplies intended for that.
The additional things you may want to consider bringing would be a battery operated radio, cards, flashlight, a couple of cold pops for the card game. However once you go for a few times you will know what you have to bring with you on your next wilderness camping trip.
