Bare Wood Furniture The Basics

By: Thomas Bridleman

If you want to add your own style and taste to a home, consider purchasing bare wood furniture. Finishing wood with a wax polish is an extremely simple task and the results will amaze you. Not only can you have a beautiful piece of furniture for a low cost but you can also achieve a unique look. Nobody will know that you bought the bare wood unfinished furniture recently. They will probably assume it is a family heirloom.

Before you can think about polishing, varnishing or even begin to paint bare wood, you need to make sure that the surfaces are filled and sealed properly. Failure to do this can result in a poor finish. The majority of woodworkers will apply general purpose filler to the wood. You should choose a paste in as close a color as possible to the original wood. If an exact match isn’t available, you will need to go slightly darker.

Alternatively if the piece has already been prepared, you may only need to paint it with sanding sealer. This will prevent the wood from soaking up the French polish or other staining product you use. Just check that it is compatible with whatever finish you have chosen as it will depend on whether you plan on staining, painting or varnishing the unfinished wood.

The other advantage to purchasing bare wood furniture is the fact that you can match it to any color scheme you like. The same can’t be said for manufactured finished pieces. You can mix compatible wood stains or dyes to achieve the color you want or reduce the darkness of a color by mixing in more solvent. You can experiment with different shades to see what best compliments the rest of the room’s décor.

That being said, varnishing is probably the best option if you want to accentuate the natural grain and beauty of the bare wood furniture.
